If you're planning newborn photos, you may be wondering: how long does a newborn photography session take?

The answer depends on the baby, the type of session you choose, and how many setups and family photos you want to include.

At My First Photo, a newborn photography studio in Miramar, Florida serving families throughout Miami and Broward County, newborn sessions can take anywhere from 30 minutes to approximately 1.5 hours.

After more than 10 years of photographing newborns, we've learned something important: a beautiful newborn photography session doesn't necessarily need to take three or four hours.

With an experienced workflow, proper preparation, and a baby-led approach, we can create beautiful newborn portraits while keeping the session calm and comfortable for your baby.

How Long Is a Typical Newborn Photography Session?

At our Miramar newborn photography studio, the length of the session depends primarily on the collection you choose.

Our newborn sessions range from:

  • 30-minute newborn sessions
  • Up to 1-hour newborn sessions
  • Up to 1.5-hour newborn sessions

A shorter session doesn't mean rushing your baby. Instead, we adjust the number of poses, setups, and combinations we photograph to the amount of time available.

For families who want a simple collection of newborn portraits, 30 minutes can be enough.

Families who want more variety, additional setups, sibling photos, or parent-and-baby portraits may benefit from a longer session.

Can You Really Do Newborn Photos in 30 Minutes?

Yes.

30-minute newborn photography session is possible, especially when the session has a simple and focused workflow.

During a shorter session, we concentrate on creating a smaller variety of beautiful images rather than trying to photograph many different setups.

The baby's comfort always comes first.

If your baby needs a moment to settle, we work with your baby's cues rather than forcing a pose simply because we are working within a shorter session.

Why Do Some Newborn Photography Sessions Take 3 or 4 Hours?

You may have heard parents say their newborn photoshoot lasted three or even four hours.

That can happen, but it doesn't mean every newborn photography session needs to be that long.

Newborn sessions can take longer because of:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Diaper changes
  • Time needed to soothe the baby
  • Multiple outfit or wrap changes
  • A large number of setups
  • Parent and sibling portraits
  • The baby's temperament that day
  • The photographer's workflow and posing style

Every newborn is different.

Some babies sleep through almost the entire session. Others are awake and curious. Some want to eat more frequently or simply need additional time to feel comfortable.

That's completely normal.

What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep During the Newborn Session?

Your baby does not have to sleep for the entire newborn photoshoot.

This is one of the biggest concerns we hear from parents.

While sleeping, babies make certain newborn poses easier, and beautiful portraits can also be created while your baby is awake.

We adapt the session according to your baby's behavior instead of expecting every baby to respond the same way.

An alert newborn can give us beautiful expressions, eye contact, tiny movements, and moments that parents often love just as much as the traditional sleepy newborn photographs.

Do Feeding Breaks Count as Part of the Session?

Feeding is a normal part of working with newborn babies.

A hungry baby will usually be much more difficult to settle, so we encourage parents to make sure their baby is comfortable and fed.

Depending on the session and your baby's needs, we may pause briefly for feeding or soothing.

This is another reason why newborn photography requires flexibility and experience.

The goal isn't simply to complete a list of poses. The goal is to create beautiful images while respecting what your baby needs.

Does the Age of My Baby Affect How Long the Session Takes?

It can.

The ideal age for traditional newborn photography is generally during the first few weeks after birth, when babies tend to sleep more deeply and naturally curl into newborn positions.

However, being older than two weeks doesn't mean you've missed your opportunity for newborn photos.

We photograph older newborns, too.

The poses and expectations may simply change depending on your baby's age, size, alertness, and comfort.

Rather than forcing an older baby into poses better suited for a very young newborn, we adapt the session to the baby in front of us.

What Can Make a Newborn Session Take Longer?

One of the biggest factors is the amount of variety you want.

For example, a session that includes only baby portraits will usually require less time than a session that includes:

baby alone + parents + siblings + multiple setups + detail photographs.

Sibling ages can also affect the workflow.

Young children don't always want to sit beside a newborn and smile on command — and that's okay. Working with siblings sometimes requires a little extra patience and creativity.

That's why choosing the right newborn session isn't only about how many minutes you receive. It's about choosing the amount of variety you want from your final gallery.
