What Should I Bring to My Newborn Photography Session?

Preparing for your newborn photography session doesn't have to be stressful. After photographing newborns for over 10 years, we've learned that bringing just a few essentials can make the experience smoother for both you and your baby.

Here are the items we recommend bringing to every newborn session at My First Photo in Miramar, Florida, serving families throughout Miami, Pembroke Pines, Weston, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and South Florida.

A Pacifier (Even If Your Baby Doesn't Usually Use One)

One of the most helpful items you can bring is a pacifier.

Many parents tell us they're worried that using a pacifier during the session will create a habit or interfere with breastfeeding.

As a mom of three who breastfed all of my children, I completely understand that concern.

The good news is that using a pacifier for a few minutes during a newborn photography session is very unlikely to create a long-term habit or affect breastfeeding. For most healthy, full-term babies with breastfeeding already established, brief pacifier use hasn't been shown to cause lasting problems.

Whenever possible, we try to soothe babies without using a pacifier. However, there are moments when it can help your baby relax just enough for us to safely transition into another pose.

The decision is always yours. We will never use a pacifier unless you're comfortable with it.

Bring Plenty of Milk

Whether your baby is breastfed, formula-fed, or receives both, it's always a good idea to bring extra milk.

Babies often get hungry during their session because posing and being gently moved can make them tired.

If you're breastfeeding, we also recommend bringing a bottle of pumped milk if possible.

We're a breastfeeding-friendly studio, and as a breastfeeding mom myself, I truly appreciate the many benefits it offers. Having pumped milk available simply gives us another option if your baby needs a quick feeding while staying comfortably wrapped or if someone else can help with feeding during the session.

Dress Baby in Easy-to-Remove Clothing

Florida weather is warm for most of the year.

We recommend dressing your baby in a loose sleeper or zip-up outfit that's easy to remove.

Newborns usually don't enjoy frequent outfit changes, and tight clothing can leave temporary marks on their skin.

Starting with simple clothing helps keep your baby comfortable and allows the session to begin smoothly.

Extra Diapers and Wipes

Newborn accidents happen—and that's completely normal!

Bring a few extra diapers and wipes so you're prepared for diaper changes during the session.

Don't worry if your baby has an accident on one of our blankets or props. After photographing thousands of newborns, we can promise you're not the first!

Any Special Item You'd Like Included

If you have a meaningful blanket, heirloom, or small keepsake, feel free to bring it.

We love incorporating sentimental items whenever it's safe and appropriate.

FAQ

Do I need to bring newborn outfits?

No. We provide a carefully selected collection of wraps, outfits, headbands, hats, and props for your baby's session. If you'd like to include a special outfit or sentimental item, you're welcome to bring it.

Should I bring a pacifier if my baby doesn't usually use one?

Yes, we recommend bringing one just in case. We rarely need it, but it can be helpful for briefly calming your baby during transitions between poses. Whether or not it's used is always your decision.

When should I feed my baby?

Feed your baby shortly before arriving whenever possible. A full baby is usually more relaxed and sleepy, making the session smoother. We also recommend bringing extra milk in case your baby gets hungry during the session.

What should my baby wear to the studio?

Dress your baby in a loose, easy-to-remove sleeper with a zipper or snaps. This helps keep your baby comfortable and avoids unnecessary outfit changes before the session begins.
