What If My Baby Doesn’t Sleep During a Newborn Photography Session?

One of the most common concerns parents have before their newborn photography session is:

“What if my baby doesn’t sleep?”

The good news is that your baby does not need to sleep through the entire newborn photoshoot to create beautiful images.

At My First Photo, our newborn photography studio in Miramar, Florida, we have photographed newborns for more than 10 years, and if there is one thing we have learned, it is that every baby is different.

Some babies arrive sleeping deeply. Others are wide awake and curious. Some fall asleep quickly, while others need more time, feeding, or soothing.

We don't expect your baby to follow a photography schedule. We adapt the session to your baby.

Does My Baby Have to Be Asleep for Newborn Photos?

No.

Sleeping newborns make it easier to create some of the traditional curled newborn poses, but being asleep is not a requirement for beautiful newborn photography.

Awake newborn portraits can be some of the sweetest images from a session.

We can capture your baby's eyes, expressions, tiny movements, stretches, yawns, and sometimes even eye contact with the camera.

These photographs show a different part of your baby's personality — and they can be just as special as sleepy newborn portraits.

What If My Baby Is Fussy During the Newborn Session?

Fussiness is completely normal.

Newborn babies communicate through crying and movement. They may be hungry, need a diaper change, want to be held, feel tired, or simply need a moment before continuing.

This is where experience with newborns becomes especially important.

After photographing babies for more than a decade, we've learned to recognize many of these cues and adjust the session accordingly.

Sometimes the solution is as simple as changing the wrap or position. Other times, your baby may need to eat or spend a few minutes with Mom or Dad.

The goal is never to force a pose at the expense of your baby's comfort.

What Happens If My Baby Is Awake During the Photoshoot?

We work with your baby rather than trying to force the session to go exactly as planned.

If your baby is awake but calm and comfortable, we photograph them awake.

There is no reason to spend valuable session time trying to make a happy, alert baby sleep simply because newborn photographs are traditionally associated with sleeping babies.

Instead, we can adjust the wrapping, positioning, angles, and setups according to what your baby is comfortable doing at that moment.

And when your baby eventually becomes sleepy, we can transition into poses that work better while sleeping.

Should I Keep My Baby Awake Before the Newborn Photoshoot?

You may see advice online telling parents to keep their newborn awake for several hours before a photography session so the baby will sleep at the studio.

We don't recommend putting pressure on yourself to completely change your baby's normal routine just for photographs.

An overtired newborn isn't necessarily a sleepy newborn. Sometimes, an overtired baby can actually be more difficult to settle.

Instead, follow the preparation instructions provided by your photographer and focus on arriving with a comfortable baby.

We will take care of the rest.

Should I Feed My Baby Before Newborn Photos?

A comfortable, well-fed baby will often settle more easily.

We recommend having your baby's food available during the session, whether your baby is breastfed or formula-fed.

If you are breastfeeding, you are absolutely welcome to feed your baby at our studio whenever needed.

Sometimes babies also want to eat more frequently during a newborn session, and that's okay.

Feeding breaks are a normal part of newborn photography.

Should I Bring a Pacifier to the Newborn Session?

We recommend bringing one, even if your baby doesn't regularly use a pacifier.

A pacifier can sometimes help soothe a newborn for a few moments while transitioning between poses or setups.

Using a pacifier briefly during a photography session does not mean that we need to use it throughout the entire session.

We always leave that decision to the parents.

Many times we don't need it at all — but having one available can be helpful.

FAQ

What if my newborn won't sleep for pictures?

Your newborn doesn't have to sleep for the entire photography session. Awake newborn portraits can capture beautiful expressions and eye contact, and the photographer can adjust poses and setups according to the baby's alertness and comfort.

Can newborn photos be taken while the baby is awake?

Yes. Calm, awake newborns can be photographed safely in positions and setups appropriate for an alert baby.

Should I keep my newborn awake before a photoshoot?

It's generally better to avoid drastically changing your baby's routine simply to make them sleep for photographs. An overtired baby can sometimes be harder to settle.

What if my newborn cries during the photoshoot?

Crying is normal newborn communication. Your baby may need feeding, soothing, a diaper change, or simply a break. An experienced newborn photographer should adapt the session to the baby's needs.
